v0.20 Update / Status of Project

0.20 has been released!

The following general changes have been made between 0.17 and 0.20:

  • 0.18: Update external Goldenwere code to fix several issues with tool-tips and camera control
  • 0.19: New settings menu design, rebind-able controls, and UI navigation
  • 0.20: Accessibility/Expanded options, many UI improvements, and other various visual changes

Why the long period between updates?

0.18 took about two weeks to finish, from the 4th of August to the 18th. 0.19 took about another two weeks to finish, from the 18th to the 3rd of September. So why the nearly 9 more months to 0.20? 0.20 was delayed by several factors:

  • I, the developer, began an internship mid-September, while also still attending uni class. This severely reduced the amount of time I had until December. About half the update was completed during this period.
  • Nearly the remaining half was completed during December, post-internship. Then the HQHouseJam began, which became a primary focus.
  • Directly after the HQHouseJam, uni started back up again, with a very project-heavy course load.
  • By the time uni was over, I pretty much had project burnout, even when I finally started having time again.
  • I was very caught up in trying to refactor the repo's file structure to use asset bundles by the very end of 0.20; however, because of some of the poor documentation of this feature of Unity, it took too long for me to figure out.

Today, I have switched off that branch of file restructuring, reverting back to where the project was before that point. I fixed a couple things I knew were low effort fixes, and built the project (I knew from extensive testing that it was okay to build).

What now?

I believe it's time to call it for the project. Too much time has passed, and now I'm again busy with yet another internship. I figure I should instead focus on even smaller projects, like the open source Goldenwere Standard Unity Assets repo (some of which are used in this project). I wanted to finally build this update because it had a huge boost of improvements, especially with accessibility and overall aesthetic; rather than let it completely wither like a previous project that was close to having a finished update. If I were to return to the project, I'd want to completely restart with asset bundles in mind, so that it's easily expanded upon not only from the development side but also the player side.
